International Entrepreneurship Group Project

Business Plan The need After conducting thorough research on the market concerning kitchen appliances, it is clear that there exists a market gap for dish washing machine. From the findings, currently in the market, there are only two business entities providing the dish washing service – one dish washing machine and the house help. The idea of setting up another washing machine manufacturing firm is, therefore, in line with the current market behavior.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on International Entrepreneurship Group Project specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Setting up another company that makes the washing machines will, as a result, provide customers with alternative to choose from; it will also push the already existing company towards producing better quality products (Kolb, 2008). In addition, proper management would allow the firm to thrive by establishing itself as the best in manufacturing washi ng machines through initiating a healthy competition within the sector. Merits The firm’s produce is environmental-friendly since the product does not release harmful wastes to the environment. The product is also convenient; it easies people’s life and saves their time. The washing machine like any other machine would serve to make work easier by working at users’ convenience. The commodity also seeks to help consumers save time by doing the required duty within the limited time. The equipment should be designed in such a manner that it should be easy in use by the target group through initiation of simple commands. The user interface should be fit by well-placed buttons with lightings that are to be easily interpreted by the user. Low cost of maintenance is another advantage of the company. Its design is well-thought in order to avoid complexity by reducing the frequency of occurrence of moving parts within the machine One of the advantages of mechanization is its speed of operation because people can do the same operation slower as compared to the output of machines.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Equally, the firm is also targeting the hotel and catering industry in general. Big hotels serving a large number of customers require efficiency and fastness in order to attend to the needs of their customers within favorable time. It is clear that by mechanizing the industry, they will not only increase the speed of the hotel operations but also ensure that employees meet all the needs of their clients as thus they have time to do that (Landstrà ¶m, 2012). The commodity will also equip the catering companies, which deliver se rvices to a large number of persons. Expected unit volume sales Given the high number in the targeted region, with the USA boasting a larger population of up to over three hundred and thirteen million, and Germany having over eighty million heads, the company stipulates to serve the outlined population by delivering the below mentionedquantity to the market. The firm will, however, concentrate on supplying the local market before setting up its operations abroad. COUNTRY POLUTATION (In millions) QTY (in ‘000) USA About 313 500 Germany About 81 150 Table 1. Estimate sales volume against population count in the USA and Germany. 4P’S Product Considering the nature of the market, both local and foreign, as outlined in the market research report, both markets have mechanized and human labor. The washing machine that is to be produced by the firm will seek to bridge the gap between the services offered by the human labor and the already established washing machine m ethod. The machine, therefore, will be designed to provide the much needed speed, efficiency, convenience and the ability to handle large volumes of load. Verily, the machine will also be easy to use, with much attention given to raw materials used in manufacturing the machine to ensure that the final product does not wear out fast. The firm will also study the prevailing market behavior to ensure that it produces the required amount of goods for the available market. This will help reduce wastage as a result of poor planning. Price In order to enter into the market, which has already been traversed by the competitors and other service providing companies, the firm would set price at a reasonable value in between the cost of hiring a house help and the pricing of the already occurring alternatives. The set price will allow the firm to maximize its profit from sales in addition to luring more customers. While the price of the commodity is expected to remain fairly static, it will be subject to change depending on the changes in the factors of production. Commodity Manufactured washing machine Washing machine in the market House-help Price $100 $130 $200 per month Table 2. Prices of the commodities in the marketAdvertising We will write a custom essay sample on International Entrepreneurship Group Project specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Place The firm should be located in proximity both to the target market and the factors of production. This would help cut on the cost of transportation from the firm’s warehouse to the market and even in shipping the raw materials from their point of production to the factory (Lord, 2012). The presence of the international airport is also an added advantage since it allows for easier exportation and transportation of the machines The Company, therefore, may be located in New York. Promotion In line with the market structure, since the market already has other substitute commodities and service providing entities, the firm, therefore, will need to do more aggressive advertisements and sales promotion in order to penetrate the market (Hisrich, 2010). The firm, therefore, plans to invest in running advertisements of the existing new product in sensitizing the population at large through business magazines; participation in business shows, televisions and even radios. Additionally, the firm seeks to provide a fifteen percent discount on the first one thousand goods to be sold. The firm also intends to do door-to-door campaigns in areas where the competitors have strongly set their base. SWOT Analysis SWOT analysis allows for evaluation of the business strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats both internally and externally. From the SWOT analysis done on establishing the firm, the factors listed below have been established as the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to the manufacturing of a washing machine. Strengths Well- organized management team, this will ensure smooth flow of firm operations in terms of supervision and execution of duties (Dana Therese, 2010). The firm intends to employ particularly from the local labor market in order to minimize on movement of the employees for proper service delivery. The management would help in supervising the firm’s operation so as to ensure the firm’s growth within the established boundary. Weaknesses The possible weaknesses for the manufacturing exercise include: – low capital base that will limit the expansion of the whole production exercise;Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More – inability to recruit experienced expertise for the manufacturing of the washing machine, which may limit the number of well-trained employees that the firm can accommodate in terms of wages. Opportunities Some of the existing opportunities that the firm seeks to take advantage of include well-established position with a clearly spelt out channel for market reach. The firm is to be set up the country’s capital that boasts well-developed infrastructure in addition to its large number of inhabitants. This will present the firm with a greater chance of delivering its product to the readily available market within the intended time. Opportunities presented for the company also include readily available market for the washing machines. This will allow for mass production of the machines, hence high profit from large sales volume. Threats Already established firms dealing with manufacturing of washing machines will offer stiff competition to the newly established firm. Gene rally, house-helps are more appealing to people than machines; therefore, they may prove a hindrance to market penetration. Possibilities of emergence of other manufacturing firms will lead to production of commodities in excess of the market; as a result, there will be reduced volume of sales hence low returns. Marketing in Germany Although marketing the product both in the USA and Germany will be more expensive in comparison to marketing only in the USA, it comes with lots of benefit as compared to the latter. Marketing in both countries (the USA and Germany) would ensure that a greater geographical region is covered within the appropriate time. This will make the brand known to a greater number of people, drawing attention to a new commodity in the market, which will translate to large sales volume as a result of reaching (Harper et al, 2010). The firm will, therefore, conduct marketing in Germany due to its large population with a view of tapping its wide market. After considera tions on the availability and occurrence of factors of production, the USA stood out as the best choice of place for setting up the firm. The reasons in favor of the US as the best location: The USA enjoys a fairly stable economy; therefore, it provides a financial security the investment. The USA has a higher population than that of Germany (U.S. CB, 2013), and since the kitchen appliance is targeting households by default, the USA would, therefore, provide a wider market. The USA is open to the whole world. Countries around the world look up to the USA for delivering better and quality products. Having the firm set up in the USA would, therefore, allow for easy penetration into the market, especially the foreign one. Generally, English, which is the national language in the country, is widely used across the whole continent. Setting up the firm in the USA will, therefore, allow for labeling, user guides and even advertisements to be done in English. This will allow the company to reach larger target group over a short time (George Yvonne, 2007). The USA also enjoys a favorable political environment, which is essential for growth of the business. Favorable political environment enables proper formulation and implementation of business policies as outlined by the government of the day. This provides protection to business entities against unfavorable completion. Additionally, the USA has better trade relations with the rest of the world, Europe in specific, which happens to be a significant target market for the product. Having the firm established in the USA will enable the firm easily to ship the product to the foreign market. Self-manufacturing versus potential outsourcing decisions and reasoning While outsourcing for ideas as well as reasoning is a more cohesive approach, it comes with increased expenditure on hiring additional professionals for the already catered for areas. While it enables the firm management to make informed decisions on policies formu lation and implementation, outsourcing for ideas slows the rate of operation especially if it comes to decision making process and implementation of policies since all the ideas drawn from outside will also be put under consideration (Christopher et al, 2012). Self-manufacturing, on the other hand, would allow the recently set-up company to blend in original ideas into operation to ensure uniqueness of the produced product. Since the firm is still a young enterprise, self –manufacturing would allow it to be run in accordance to the set objectives, without interference from external input. It will also allow the firm to make faster decision in addition to ensuring that decisions made are in line with the business objectives (Gary, 2010). In line with this understanding, owing to the firm’s limited financial base, the company will be looking to establish itself as a self- manufacturing entity. Distribution methods Taking into consideration the firm’s proximity to the market and the nature of commodity that the firm would be dealing with, the company should consider setting up sales point in the major targeted areas for an easy access by the potential customers. Areas where low sales volume is anticipated will be served on customer orders by the door-to-door delivery method, by a van in order to create a good rapport with customers (Malcolm, 2012). Goods made for the external market will be airlifted to the firm’s warehouses, which have been set up in the foreign market. From the warehouses, the company will deliver the product to the customers upon purchase by a van. In some areas, however, the product will be stored in the warehouse long enough until demand arises. HR plan Being a business setup dealing in the manufacturing of electrical washing machine, the firm will obviously need to have a human resource plan dealing with the recruitment, evaluation and dismissal of its employees. In this line, the HR would be required to abide by the labor laws and regulations employed in the different countries (Coase, 2012). In the USA, for example, the firm is to abide by the following labor policies. The set minimum wage for every employee act outlines the minimum wage to be paid. The Fair Labor Standards Act established in 1938 dictates the minimum wage and payments for overtime hours that employers in the private sector need to pay their employees taking into consideration a number of exceptions in reference to the nature and capacity of the business operations. The USA also has in place the free movement and immigration act that allows employees to roam freely within the country borders, when discharging their duties. Employers, therefore, should ensure that employees that they seek to employ are available within the allocated time as spelt out in the contract signed between the two parties. The labor industry is also regulated by the pension policy, which seeks to protect employees from being denied their rightful r etirement gains, upon expiry of the contract or on official retirement as outlined in the policies. The Employee Retirement Income Security Act establishes the agreed standard and criteria for funding the retirement and care benefits that the employers offer to their employees upon retirement. The Employee Retirement Income Security Act also spells out the necessary actions to be taken against the employers that discriminate against employees preventing them from obtaining their deserved benefits as outlinedin the state laws that govern the labor industry. Health care and safety act outlines the standards for workplace safety. This act also enables workers to refuse to work under unhealthy and unsafe conditions (USA DOL, 2013). The act also provides that the employers, especially in the manufacturing industry, should give their employees protective guards to offer protection against injuries and harmful chemicals. Trade union act allows workers to participate in trade unions, activi ties dealing with union’s welfares and other businesses within the set state laws, in which the workers would like to involve (William, 2004). Right to organize, this state law allows the employees in the private sector to be represented by their trade unions in legal disputes between employers and employees. Equally, the dismissal protection policy protects the workers against unlawful dismissal form duty by their employers. Alike the USA, Germany also has state laws and provisions that aim at protecting both the employers and the employees. Some of these policies are listed below. Federal Data Protection Act protects the employees against infringement of their right to privacy as a result of improper handling of their personal data by the interested parties. It also outlines equivalent penalties for employers who do not comply with the set standards. Germany also has adopted the Termination Protection Act which protects the employees from untimely voluntary resignation of e mployees without prior notice or ascension of the employer. Germany also has the environmental protection policy that requires manufacturing firms in the country properly to dispose their waste products. This policy also providesfor the allowed amount of poisonous gaseous wastes that industries can release into the atmosphere. It also provides for the penalties that the industries may face should they violate the environmental control policies. From the foregoing, it is true that there are policies that cut across in both countries, the USA and Germany. These policies include the employee protection act which protects the employees from unlawful dismissal from their duties by their employers. Additionally, both countries have the environmental protection act that seeks to regulate the amount of wastes that manufacturing firms release into environment. The states also have different sets of policies regarding the labor industry. Unlike the USA, in Germany, the labor policy requires t he employees to provide their employers with prior notification of their resignation from duty in correspondence with German’s employment statutes. The employees are, however, exempted from providing such a notice in cases where they have been involved in criminal acts, and when the working conditions are deemed unhealthy for both parties involved. Additionally, in comparison with the USA which has put more restrictions on the employee’s background checks through state and local laws, in Germany, such restrictions have more obligations that outweigh the advantages attached to the whole exercise. Again, unlike in the USA, employers in Germany should take into consideration the German quota obligation that requires at least five percent of employees to be disabled in cases where the firm intends to employ more than twenty workers (Jens et al, 2010). Power of the Presidency essays

Power of the Presidency essays During the twentieth century, the power of the presidency would grow very much. This came as a result of the actions of a few men that were some of the best leaders in the history of the United States. They were men that knew what they wanted to accomplish and how they wanted to do it. Their drive to enhance the power of the presidency would become very evident during and after their terms as president of the U.S. One of the men that were instrumental in advancing the power of the presidency during the twentieth century was Mr. Theodore Roosevelt. President Roosevelt held the ideal that the Government should be the great arbiter of the conflicting economic forces in the Nation, especially between capital and labor. Roosevelt emerged spectacularly as a "trust buster" by forcing the dissolution of a great railroad combination in the Northwest. Mr. Roosevelt steered the United States more actively into world politics. He liked to quote a favorite proverb, "Speak softly and carry a big stick". His corollary to the Monroe Doctrine prevented the establishment of foreign bases in the Caribbean and arrogated the sole right of intervention in Latin America to the United States. Some of Mr. Theodore Roosevelt's most effective achievements were in conservation. He added enormously to the national forests in the West, reserved lands for public use, and fostered great irrigation projects. As President, Roosevelt saw himself a representative of all the people, including farmers, laborers, white collar workers, and businessmen. He wanted to make things better for the common man and he was successful. Mr. Franklin D. Roosevelt was another president who had a lot to do with the strengthening of the presidency. He became president at the height of the depression and used his New Deal program to help the economy. Finance and banking were regulated by new laws that loosened credit and insured deposits. A series of government agencie...

Core Competence of Sharp Corporation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Core Competence of Sharp Corporation - Essay Example From this paper it is clear that there were abundant literatures providing theoretical and empirical support justifying that competitive advantage is derived from imperfectly tradable, imperfectly substitutable and valuable assets. The idea of portfolio approach encouraging diversification into unrelated areas that flourished in 1960s and 1970s lost its fervor to RBV approach advocating diversification into related areas. RBV approach also was critical of multi divisonalisation of a large company that led to corporate fragmentation and short-termism undermining the development of core competencies and innovations. Core competency exploitation led to vertical integration in large companies to achieve competitive advantage. But of late vertical disintegration is being attempted in the globalization tendencies which offer wide opportunities to delegate to external suppliers with highly specialized expertise resulting in more pronounced core competency approach for the given company. As the paper highlights Hammel and Prahalad in their book â€Å"Competing for the future†assert that companies should look forward to the share of future opportunity share rather than current market share. They say that successful enterprises will reshape their industries rather than themselves by building upon their unique core competencies without building upon current product lines and that this will lead to creation of new competencies. They advocate new strategy which requires four approaches namelyunderstanding of the shape of future competition; process by which to gauge tomorrow’s opportunities; energizing the company from top-to-bottom to prepare for the future; and   overtaking the competitors and arrive at the future first without assuming undue risks.

Critical Response of the Jordanian Government Published a Code of Essay

Critical Response of the Jordanian Government Published a Code of Conduct Regulating Relations between the Media and the Governm - Essay Example If the spirit of text is to be followed, it clearly makes a demarcation between media and the government so that the media is guaranteed with a freedom of expression as stipulated in the Constitution of Jordan. It even went into details as to prohibit government in providing â€Å"the provision of financial incentives or in-kind designed to influence the journalists or the media and work on the subject of any practice inconsistent with the laws and the Charter of the press approved by the JPA†. This meant that government and its agencies are prohibited to give bribes to media in any form or kind that will influence its function as a press agency out of fear of black mail or to pursue its own popularity by influencing media through incentives. The text also circumscribed the state’s power of the purse to ensure that it does not influence media by the leverage of its ad placement. To prevent this, it directs its â€Å"departments and institutions through a direct purchas e from the market† to ensure that it will not meddle with the media that would compromise its independence. Meaning, government and its agencies will buy its subscriptions from the market and not through the free subscription given by the media. The guideline also prohibits government institution from employing any entity from the media to prevent it from having a close relation with the press which might induce it to influence the press. It ensures the objectivity of the media by guaranteeing, through the guidelines, that the media as an institution is separate and apart from the government and thus independent. Again, if the spirit of these guidelines is to be strictly followed, it can be considered as revolutionary in terms of upholding press freedom in Jordan because government is distancing itself from the media to ensure its independence and objectivity that can be likened to the code of regulations that govern the press in non-Arab countries. The text might have been th e original draft of the National Agenda Committee which was a response of the government to prevent any similar uprising in Jordan that happened in its neighbouring countries. It is important to note that in March 7, 2011 hundreds of Jordanian journalists emboldened by the wave of Arab uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia demanded an end to government’s curtailment of media freedom in Jordan (al-Khalidi 2011). There is a big probability that the draft was just a political move of the government to quell a possible uprising in Jordan and did not necessarily mean it. The draft was obviously not final because a month after the publication of such guidelines, Daoud Kuttab, a prominent journalist from Al Arabiya was called by the National Agenda Committee headed by Marwan Muasher in April of 2011 to consult his opinion in the government’s initiative â€Å"to design a strategic media plan† (Kuttab a 2011). Series of meetings happened after the initial meeting where a sugges tion to adopt a media council and ending the mandatory membership in journalist association were adopted. â€Å"The new strategy also recommended revision of a dozen or so laws related to the media† (Kuttab a 2011). The progressive initiative to uphold media independence and freedom was however temporary as a draft of Press and Publications Law was also forced through the Cabinet in parallel to the strategic media plan. The draft of the Press and Publica

The Present Business Environment Business Essay

The Present Business Environment Business Essay Business environment is changing drastically in todays corporate world. In early years of current management era manager were suppose to work exclusively with equipments, data and systems; performing traditional tasks. But scenario of management responsibilities has been changed significantly and todays manger faces issues like cross training, personnel management , interdepartmental communication and widening job scope. Role Of Managers Managers run large corporations as well as entrepreneurial start-ups. They are found in government departments, not-for-profit agencies, museums, schools and even such non traditional organizations as political campaigns and consumer cooperatives. Managers can also be found doing managerial work in every country around the globe. No matter where managers are found and what gender they are, the fact is that managers have exciting and challenging jobs. Changes Affecting Managers Job Following are the few well known changes due to which manager job is affecting. CHANGE IMPACT OF CHANGE Shifting organizational boundaries Virtual workplaces More mobile workforce Flexible work arrangements Empowered employees Work life-personal life balance Changing Technology Risk Management Restructured workplace Discrimination concerns Globalization concerns Employee assistance Uncertainty over future energy sources/prices Changing security threats Redefined values Rebuilding trust Increased accountability Increased emphasis on organizational and managerial ethics Customer service Innovation Globalization Efficiency/productivity Increased competitiveness CHALLENGES FACED BY MANAGER Management can be a tough and often thankless job. A portion of a managers job may entail duties that are often more clerical than managerial. Managers often have to deal with a variety of personalities. It can be a challenge to motivate workers in the face of uncertainty. With the fast changing world, we need to cope up with things that could hinder the development of ones managerial skills. Here are the most common challenges faced by manager and how to solve them. Employee motivation:   Motivating the employees and maintaining their morale is essential for every business. However, this is only possible when any grievances of employees are adequately addressed while ensuring the companys interests. This is a significant challenge faced by management, especially in todays economy where the ever increasing cost of living leads to increased employee dissatisfaction, which is difficult to handle when the cost of doing business is rising rapidly. Recruitment:   Hiring the right people for the right job is a tough task. Analyzing the skills required for a particular job and searching through the multitude of resumes to find the perfect match is a challenge for any management. Market changes:   Keeping a constant watch on market trends and evolving the business to adequately match the consumers demands is another challenging responsibility.   ROLE OF GLOBALIZATION A major environmental change that has taken place in the last fifteen years is the globalization of business. The world has become a global village and business has become global in character. Organizations are venturing beyond national boundaries in the pursuit of business opportunities. The emergence of a borderless world has had a tremendous impact on the way organizations behave. They are no longer insulated from foreign competition, and this has forced organizations to examine cost efficiencies, structure, job design, human capital, and many other sources of effectiveness and competitiveness. Responding to globalization is becoming more and more important; this result in redefining business model. Today change is happening at a rate that does not afford organizations the luxury of managing one major change at a time. Today managers are facing two questions because of globalization, how does relentless change redefine the nature of management and the structure of an enterprise? And what role should management play in re-shaping the enterprise? Example Toyota Motor Corporation makes cars in USA and Pakistan, Mc Donalds sells burgers in Pakistan and hamburgers in China, and Marks and Spencers sells products in Pakistan. Every other product sold by Wal-Mart stores Inc. is made in China or Pakistan. ROLE OF TECHNOLOGY Technology has had a tremendous impact upon the global business environment. Communication, transportation and production efficiency are various areas of business which have been enhanced by the development and improvement of technology. As continual enhancements are made, the world continues to grow smaller and businesses have further reach than ever. Computers The most important technological development to impact the global business environment is the world of computers. There are various programs which help maintain records of inventories and shipments. Email allows for instantaneous communication almost anywhere in the world. Besides its speed, email is easily forwarded and retained. The communication in the global business environment is improved with the use of email. The impact of computers on the global business environment is wide-ranging and also includes the Internet, which is a useful tool for international companies. By using the Internet, companies across the world can perform research and learn more about partners and suppliers. Conference Calls and Video Conferencing Conference calls allow people in multiple locations to be involved in the same conversation. Video conferencing provides the same service, but with the added benefit of all parties being able to actually see each other. Both of these forms of communication have a definite impact on the global business environment. With either form of technology, a parent company in China can have a conversation with a raw material supplier in Pakistan and a manufacturing plant in Taiwan. This improves communication on a global scale and enables all parties to understand specific plans and agreements. Shipment Tracking Corporations now have the ability to track shipments virtually anywhere across the world. Global Positioning Systems (GPS) allow accurate tracking. The implication of this technology on the global business environment is the ability to let customers know exactly where their shipments are at any given time. This technology creates secure relationships within the global business field. ROLE OF COMPETITION Competition has intensified for many organizations over the last decade, primarily as a result of the business. Competitors fill a need for business owners by keeping them on the cutting edge. Without competitors, a business would have no reason to keep prices in check. It would create a monopoly which is never good in any society. When two competitors compete for business, the market (customers) are the ones who decide who they will patronize with their dollars. Prices are usually the first element people choose when deciding which business or product to go with. Competitors drive innovation and keep new ideas and procedures moving forward. Imagine if McDonalds were the only fast food hamburger restaurant in the world. There would never be a Burger King to compete. All food would taste bland and boring. ROLE OF ETHICAL AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Many consumers and social advocates believe that businesses should not make a profit but also consider the social implications of their activities. Social responsibility is a businesss obligation to maximize its positive impact minimize its negative impact on society. Although many people use the terms social responsibility and ethics interchangeably, they do not mean the same thing. Business ethics relates to an individuals or a work groups decisions that society evaluates as right or wrong, whereas social responsibility is a broader concept that concerns the impact of the entire businesss activities on society. From an ethical perspective, for example, we may be concerned about a health care organization or practitioner over- charging the provincial government for medical services. From a social responsibility perspective, we might be concerned about the impact that this overcharging will have on the ability of the health care system to provide adequate services for all citizens. The most basic ethical and social responsibility concerns have been codified as laws and regulations that encourage businesses to conform to societys standards, values, and attitudes. At a minimum, managers are expected to obey these laws and regula- tions. Most legal issues arise as choices that society deems unethical, irresponsible, or otherwise unacceptable. However, all actions deemed unethical by society are not necessarily illegal, and both legal and ethical concerns change over time. Business law refers to the laws and regulations that govern the conduct of business. Many problems and conflicts in business can be avoided if owners, managers, and employees know more about business law and the legal system. Business ethics, social responsibility, and laws together act as a compliance system requiring that businesses and employees act responsibly in society.

In Support of Capital Punishment :: Argumentative Persuasive Essays

In Support of Capital Punishment I believe that capital punishment is a justifiable means of punishment for the most heinous crimes. In addition, the means of execution should not matter if the basic principle behind this form of justice can be justified by the specific crime. This is why my opinion is that any form of capital punishment in effect in the United States today is warranted and fair. Recent executions have drawn a great deal of publicity to the subject of whether death by electrocution is "cruel and unusual". Cases such as that of Pedro Medina, whose mask caught on fire during the procedure, and Jesse Tafero, whose head caught on fire, provide examples of punishments gone wrong, and therefore punishments possibly being cruel and unusual. At this moment, all executions in Florida are on hold as the Supreme Court has agreed to consider whether or not the electric chair is cruel and unusual. However, there are just a few examples of botched cases, concentrated in Florida. Other evidence provided by those opposing the use of electrocution as a form of the death penalty is the fact that the 2,000 volts of electricity cause every muscle in the body to contract, something that should be very painful. However, even withstanding this argument, I believe that capital punishment in any form allowed by the U.S. Constitution at this moment is justified. I believe that if every person is given one life, another person does not have the right to take an extra one. A murderer has forfeited the quota and his life is not his responsibility or fate any longer. The punishment is then decided by the society the murderer is a part of. The United States has adopted execution as a legal means of punishment and I agree with the method and the principle behind it. I believe that if lethal injections or electrocutions or any other forms of capital punishment were televised, or at least made more public, it would serve as a real deterrent. In other countries where severe punishment is more public, the rate of crime is tremendously lower. Although I understand that many atrocious crimes are committed in moments of passion or inebriation or chemical highs, many are committed as calculated events.

Getting Started on Your Essay Essay

1 Write a thesis statement. Your thesis should state the main point you are arguing in your essay and the main supporting arguments in the order you are going to make them. It should be from one to three sentences long. 2 Write your body paragraphs. Each body paragraph should discuss one argument you made in your thesis statement in detail. You should provide evidence such as quotations from the text or the opinions of scholars and experts. You may also want to address common counter-arguments and explain why they are incorrect. 3 Write transitions between your body paragraphs. A transition between two paragraphs takes place either in the last sentence of the first paragraph or the first sentence of the second. It should make the paper flow smoothly, showing how the different points you make are connected. 4 Write a conclusion. Your conclusion should succinctly summarize the arguments you made in your essay, and relate them to broader issues. For example, if you are analyzing themes in a particular piece of fiction, you can relate those themes to the author, his contemporaries, his time period, or even modern times. This makes the essay feel more significant, since it shows how your topic fits within a wider context. 5 Write the introduction. The introduction starts off broad and narrows down to the thesis statement, which forms the end of the intro. For example, if you were talking about the Illiad, you might start talking about Classical Greek literature, then talk about Greek epics, then discuss Homer and finally discuss the Illiad. The intro sets the tone of the essay, because it gives the reader context. 6 Edit the essay for language. A formal essay should use English that is formal, but not stiff. Eliminate slang, conversational tone and idiomatic sayings. Eliminate†you† phrases like â€Å"if you think about it.† Also, eliminate I expressions like â€Å"I will show you,† or â€Å"I believe that.† If you have any doubts about whether or not your language is formal, ask your teacher. 7 Edit the essay for mechanics. Make sure that your sentences are grammatically correct and correctly punctuated. Make sure that any titles of books you refer to are underlined and that you have written citations for any references. You should have a style sheet which tells you how the teacher wants you to cite your sources. 8 If you are allowed to, have a friend or relative read your essay. Ask them to look for technical problems, illogical statements and awkward sentences. Sometimes, an outside reader will be able to catch things that the author misses. Tips & Warnings It is possible to write the introduction first, but usually it’s not the best way to go. It’s difficult to write an introduction when you haven’t completely worked out what you are introducing (i.e. what the essay is arguing). Don’t stress about the language the first time through. Get your points down and make your arguments in a style that feels right to you. Then, come back and rewrite it in more formal language.
